GOVERNMENT TO PREVENT GMO FOOD LABELING
Lawrenceville, NJ (Dr Simone) – Sixty-four countries require GMO food labeling but not the United States. H.R. 1599, ironically called the Safe Food and Accurate Food Labeling Act (commonly referred to as the DARK Act – the Deny Americans the Right to Know Act about GMO food labeling), was passed by the House. Because Americans have a right to know, the bill is opposed by The Center for Food Safety, the Environmental Working Group (EWG), others, and myself (HARMFUL INGREDIENTS TO AVOID IN YOUR DRINK ) . The Bill was lobbied by the Grocery Manufacturers Association and sponsored by Mike Pompeo (R-KS). If it is enacted into law it will:

make it illegal for states to require GMO labeling. Currently Vermont, Maine, and Connecticut have laws requiring GMO labeling but those states would have to rescind their laws.

prohibit the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to create a national GMO labeling standard.

allow products to be labelled as “natural,” even though they contain GMOs.

make it illegal for counties and states to place restrictions on the planting of GMO crops.Currently, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington have restrictions about where GMO crops can be planted so as to control the risk of organic farms being contaminated by GMOs because wind and pollen carried by bees can spread GMOs to them. This contamination is so widely spread that most organic corn in the U.S. typically contains anywhere from 0.5% to 2% GMOs, according to companies that sell such corn to organic dairies or poultry farmers. Contamination will drive organic farmers out of business.
The Genetic Modification that the industry has chosen to introduce to plants is herbicide resistance. This allows farmers to use huge amounts of chemical herbicides applied to GMO crops without harming the crops, and even more increases are scheduled in the next few years. Most of the corn and soybeans grown in the US are GMOs. And according to the Grocery Manufacturers Association, approximately 80 percent of packaged foods in stores contain GMO ingredients, .
Glyphosate (Roundup – Monsanto), the most widely used herbicide on GMO crops is classified as a “probable human carcinogen” (International Agency for Research on Cancer [IARC]) – linked to human lymphoma.
2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid), a component of Agent Orange, is another widely used herbicide and is classified as a “possible human carcinogen” (IARC).
The use of glyphosate has increased by a factor of 250 in the US and by a factor of 10 around the world. This has led to glyphosate-resistant weeds requiring more herbicides including, yes, you guessed it, 2,4-D a component of Agent Orange that was used in the Vietnam War. The Environmental Protection Agency in 2014 approved Enlist Duo, a combination of Glyphosate and 2,4-D. And simultaneously, the industry markets new GMO seeds to resist both. So 2,4-D, the component in Agent Orange, will increase dramatically.

The risk assessment for Enlist Duo is flawed. The studies given to the EPA were poorly designed, outdated and did not take into account human exposure. Toxicology studies were done in the 1980s and 1990s and paid for by the industry but never published. After that time period, we learned a great deal about the effects of herbicides on hormones and genes (epigentics), the effects on infants and children, and the effects on insects that pollinate – information never obtained or submitted.
Given all this information, the National Academy of Sciences will review and publish their findings in 2016. But this is too late for our protection.
The two main herbicides are human carcinogens (probable and possible). Our Government is supposed to protect us from harm. The DARK Act must be stopped because it prevents Americans from being able to choose GMO foods or not. Our liberties are being taken away and this tyranny must stop.
