HEALTHY FOODS COST LESS THAN FAST FOODS
Lawrenceville, NJ (Dr Simone) – Childhood obesity affects one in three American children and is more common in low socioeconomic families. About 70% of children from at-risk families and adults do not attain the recommended intake for grains, vegetables, fruits, or vitamins and minerals ( MARGINAL VITAMIN DEFICIENCIES ).
Healthy foods purchased from grocery stores take more time to prepare but cost much less than fast foods. In fact, the study published in 2010 by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine found that the cost for the convenient-food-diet model was more than twice that of the healthy-diet model: $10,298 per year versus $5,019 (https://www.stfm.org/fmhub/fm2010/April/Andrew280.pdf ). The average cost of the fast food diet was $15.30 and the healthy diet was $7.48 per day.
Oakton Community College showed that it cost $87 per week when one purchases all three fast food meals each day compared to only $43 per week when one purchases food from the grocery store for three meals a day per person ( http://www.oakton.edu/user/0/eermolen/Publication1.pdf ). Again, fast food costs twice as much.
