DIABETES DRUGS – THE GOOD AND THE BAD

Lawrenceville, NJ (Dr Simone) – Diabetes affects about 1 in 6 people in the US. Many with Type II diabetes take oral medications for it. Those who used pioglitazone (Actos, Takeda) daily for more than two years doubled their risk for urinary bladder cancer, accordingly to one study.

Metformin, on the other hand, an older commonly used drug for diabetes has been shown to decrease the risk for breast cancer in older women with diabetes. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22689798
