75% of American Physicians are Employees

Do Employers Influence Your Treatments?

Hospitals have created health systems that command strong monopoly positions in many US health care markets.  And after the Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010 these health systems, together with major insurers and other corporate groups, started buying up physician practices quickly and easily.  These once independent physicians regarded this as their retirement nest egg.

2012 – only 5.6% of physicians were employed by hospitals

2022 – 75% of American physicians are employees (53% hospital employed, 23% corporate employed)

“Most physicians now face the possibly new experience of being employees of increasingly large organizations — a challenging scenario for a profession that has jealously guarded its independence and autonomy.”

The hospital health systems get higher reimbursement for most everything compared to the private practice physician.  Patients are referred only to that health system’s laboratory department, radiology department, all other departments, other employed specialists, etc.

Health care costs are driven much higher as we have seen with

PRIVATE EQUITY OWNED HOSPITALS INCREASE HEALTH CARE COSTS, INCREASE COMPLICATIONS FOR PATIENTS BY 25%, AND HAVE A HIGHER RATE OF DEATHS

It is unlikely that unions would be able to counter these powerful employers and help regain physician professional autonomy.

These monopolies must be reversed.
